Frequently Asked Questions about Pregnancy Relaxation

A lot of people are very skeptical or dismissive when they hear the word ‘hypnobirthing’ as the word itself gives the idea of a ‘hippie’ intervention that involves someone else controlling your mind. In fact, it is almost the total opposite of this and is well-researched. For example, Uldal et al., 2023 found that people who attended hypnobirthing classes gave people more confidence and trust in their own bodies, as well as a sense of control, resulting in more positive birth experiences for this group of participants, regardless of their mode of birth.

This is echoed by Yaqoob et al., 2024 who concluded that regularly practising hypnobirthing techniques during pregnancy resulted in less anxiety and fear during childbirth.

Birth Journeys antenatal course participants have said similar things; for example, Dani, a first-time Mum who attended my January course gave birth to her son on the Lotus Suite at LGI in March. She told me:

“Doing your classes and realising what a labour can be like completely changed my perspective and I don’t think I’d have had the same birth experience otherwise.”

Absolutely – you may wish to book this in addition to a full antenatal course but it is important to know that there is some crossover in content between the two courses. The full course will be a MUCH deeper dive into hypnobirthing topics, putting this alongside active birth, medical intervention, partner support and all things postnatal. Some people have enjoyed the relaxation course in addition as it’s given them a chance to carve out time for just themselves and get-to-know other mums-to-be too.

Each session finishes with a guided relaxation, to send you off floating into the weekend. Regular relaxation is associated with better obstetric and neonatal outcomes: reduced stress means that hormones are regulated, reducing chance of complications in pregnancy. Alongside other hypnobirthing tools, relaxation is taught in a way that means you can access this during labour, to feel calm, grounded and able to adapt to changing situations.

This short course is for mums-to-be only. Whilst I absolutely recognise the importance of partner involvement and support for a positive birth, the course is designed to be a chance to wind down from your week and connect with yourself, your baby and other mums-to-be. Resources will be distributed at the end of the course to share with your birth partner(s). This short course complements my Active Birth workshop (link to page) really well and most people book both for a more rounded approach to birth prep – the workshop is popular with partners as it gives techniques and tools to support you!!
